Endnotes and footnotes are critical parts of research papers found at the end of the paper or at the footer of the page. Endnotes and research paper footnotes serve to expand on citations without interrupting the actual text of the paper. Depending on your style guide, MLA, APA, Chicago, you will format your endnotes and footnotes pages differently.

Endnotes

Endnotes can be found at the end of the paper before the works cited page in MLA format. The notes are references to specific documents with page numbers and publications with the document inventory numbers. Endnotes are indicated with a superscript of arabic numeral at the end of the sentence that features cited material. Endnotes page should follow in numerical order and all endnotes featured in the text of the paper. To find out more about endnotes, please click here now.

Footnotes

Research paper footnotes are located at the bottom of each page in the footer section. In the text portion of your paper, the footer should be referenced with an arabic numeral. In Chicago and Turabian styles, the footer replaces in text citations. At the end of each page of your research paper, you will have your footnotes that were used on that page. The numbering of footnotes continues from one page to another and does not reset. The same number should not be used for two different footnotes.
